Dooms day 1!

Doomsday 1 challenge:
Team: Seth, Jacob, Joshua and Tyler

Plan: our team has to use maths and science to stop the asteroid and save the earth from extinction!

Problem: In a year an asteroid the size of the U.S.A is going to hit near the city of Auckland NZ!

Research: Asteroid impact avoidance comprises a number of methods by which near-Earth objects could be diverted, preventing potentially catastrophic impact events. A sufficiently large impact would cause massive tsunamis or (by placing large quantities of dust into the stratosphere, blocking sunlight) an impact winter, or both. A collision between the Earth and a ~10km object 65 million years ago is believed to have produced the Chicxulub Crater and the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. link to site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid_deflection_strategies

Ideas: Giant mining laser?
Atomic bomb ?
